10 Awesome Texts for the 10 Days of Awe (Day 1)

NOTE: Each day from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur I will be posting an inspiring Jewish text along with a few questions for reflection. Feel free to answer and discuss here, or to use these questions for your own reflection/journaling. These texts are also being posted on my Facebook page.

TEXT 1: Mishneh Torah, Laws of Repentance 3:14 (12th century code by Maimonides)
The sounding of the shofar is not only a commandment but also a symbol. It is as if it says, “Wake up, you who are sleeping! Rouse yourselves from your slumber, examine your deeds and return in repentance!”

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION:

  • Was there ever a moment in your life when you felt like you woke up from spiritual or mental slumber? What did it feel like, and what led to it?
  • What kinds of feelings/reactions does the sound of the shofar evoke in you?
