My favorite Passover song is Adir Hu. (Click on the words to listen. I don’t know who that guy is, but he sings a mean Adir Hu.) I like it for no other reason than that I love the melody. The optimism of the tune matches the optimism of the lyrics, which mean: “May God who is mighty/exalted/great/distinguished/learned/righteous/etc rebuild God’s house soon. Quickly. quickly, God, build Your house soon!” Although I don’t believe literally in the rebuilding of the Temple, the metaphor of that rebuilding – that the world can be made a better place – is very powerful. Plus, this song always makes me happy.
What’s your favorite Passover song, and why?
I like Echad Mi Yodeah. Its really fun to sing tongue twisters when you are drunk!
Awww, you don’t love it because its a conjugate of the name of your super strange friend?
Just kidding. The song that stands out most for me is the 4 questions. (It is 4, right?) I think its because I’m the youngest of all my cousins so I sang it for a really long time. 🙂
Echad mi yodea, because of the theology and the challenge to do the last verse in a single breath.
Who knows one? – as commented above. It’s just so fun! Although Dayenu can be quite enjoyable and of course, any of the many silly songs like the ballad of the four sons! Oh, who am I kidding, I love them all!
I’m a big fan of the new Passover songs by Peter & Ellen Allard. Check out their site: peterandellen.com
Chag Sameach!
